How Often Should You Really Wash and Detail Your Car?

“Once a week” is the answer you’ll see everywhere, but it’s not really true for most people. How often your car needs a wash — and how often it needs a proper detail — depends far more on where you park and drive than on a fixed calendar rule. Here’s a more useful way to think about it.
The factors that actually change the answer
Two people driving the same model of car can need completely different wash schedules. What matters most:
- Where you park — street parking under trees means sap, pollen and bird droppings, which eat into wax faster than plain dust
- Your climate — coastal air carries salt that speeds up corrosion; dry regions build up fine grit that scratches paint if wiped rather than washed off
- Your commute — highway driving picks up bugs and tar; city traffic adds brake dust to wheels faster than the rest of the car gets dirty
- Who else uses the car — kids, pets and takeaway coffee are the biggest driver of how often the interior needs attention
A practical schedule to work from
If you don’t want to think about it every week, this is a reasonable default for an average daily driver:
- Every 1–2 weeks: a quick outside rinse and wipe-down to clear surface dust and grime before it sits on the paint
- Monthly: a full Deluxe Wash with an interior vacuum, so dirt doesn't get ground into carpets over time
- Every 2–3 months: a Wax & Polish to keep a protective layer that makes water bead and roll off
- Every 6 months (or after anything messy): an Interior Detail — steam cleaning and shampoo catch what a vacuum can't
If your car lives outdoors near trees, on the coast, or does a lot of dusty back-road driving, move everything on this list up by about a third.
Signs your car needs attention now, schedule or not
A few give-away signs are more reliable than any fixed timetable:
- Water stops beading — if rain just sheets flat instead of forming beads, your wax layer is worn out
- The paint feels gritty, not smooth — contaminants are bonded to the clear coat and a proper polish is overdue
- There's a smell that wasn't there before — interior odours almost always mean it's past time for a steam clean
- Wheels look darker than the rest of the car — built-up brake dust is mildly corrosive to alloy finishes over time

Treat the schedule above as a starting point, not a rule — then adjust based on where your car actually lives and how it’s actually used. The goal isn’t a spotless car every single day; it’s catching dirt and grime before it has a chance to damage the paint or interior underneath it.
